The earliest voting in colonial America did not involve a ballot and made their choice by show of hands or stating their vote loudly.

Tarpaulin: Sheltering in adverse conditions
Born out of the word tar + palling meaning a ‘tarred canvas’, tarpaulin is widely used across the world for various needs. In an election scenario, it can be used to construct temporary registration centers or election stations in remote areas or during harsh weather. The sheets have eyelets at each of the four ends to pass ropes through them and fasten to an anchor. With high tensile strength and better puncture resistance, they offer flexibility and suit irregular shapes perfectly.
